Batfest is back, bigger and better than ever! This Saturday in Austin, tens of thousands of people will gather at the Congress Avenue Bridge to watch millions of bats stream out from under the bridge.

Festivities start at 1:00pm, with a full day of events, shopping, and music planned. Parking is available but if you have the energy to walk or ride your bike to the bridge, I would recommend it as organizers expect to see around 40,000 people attend the event. Congress Avenue Bridge is only a little less than 2 miles away from Gables Pressler, which makes for about a 30 minute walk. There will be bike parking available at the bike racks at both ends of the bridge.
What can you expect to find at Austin Batfest? You will find over 20 live music acts on two stages, educational activities, over 150 booths set up by local vendors.
When will the bats fly? Well, the bats are not trained mammals, ready to perform on demand. Their times vary, but organizers expect the Mexican Free Tailed Bats to soar between 8:00-9:30pm.
Is the party over when the bats fly? You’re welcome to leave whenever you wish, but no, the festivities will go on until midnight.

The time has come again for Austin Restaurant Week, when dozens of area restaurants offer a chance to sample their food at a significant discount. This year it’s not just about those $25-35 dinners… Lunch will be available at many restaurants for a reduced rate of $10-15 as well!

Austin Restaurant Week will be held September 19–22 and September 26–29. Check the Austin Restaurant Week website to find out if your favorite Austin restaurant is participating, what menu they’re serving, and to make your reservation.
One of the many participating restaurants is Tacos and Tequila, part of our wonderful mixed use community at Gables Pressler apartments. TNT’s dinner menu will be $25 per person and include one of their delicious margaritas.

Have you really taken full advantage of Zilker Metropolitan Park?
It’s spring time and with Zilker Park only three miles away, you can always have something to do without worrying about these high gas prices.

You can never be bored with this beautiful, 350 acre park. So you know what I am going to do just to ensure that you won’t get bored? I will make a list of five things you can do five billion times this spring and summer. Five things you can never get bored doing because every time you do them they will give you different experience.
1.Paddle a canoe on Town Lake. Try to beat your last time of getting across the lake. And you know what? Bring the dog! I don’t think he would be a great paddler, but he is still great company.
2. Take a ride on the Zilker Zephyr miniature train. You can do some people watching while you cruise through the park. I love to watch people; they are so entertaining. It’s amazing what you see when people don’t think others are watching.
3. Exercise on the hike and bike trails. Set goals for yourself and each time you come back to bike or hike try to extend your time.
4. Have a picnic. Have themed picnics. You could have a healthy picnic, vegetarian picnic, Cajun-inspired picnic, ‘everything you have never eaten, try it’ picnic, and the list can go on and on.
5. Zilker Hillside Theatre. They offer a lot of different shows and events. In fact, next Saturday, April 9, there will be a South Asian New Year’s Festival from noon ‘til 9 pm.
Hope these activities will keep you busy and happy this spring/summer. Now grab the dog and prepare to work you arms. Let’s work this list from beginning to end, and then again.
